Kaleidoscopes - the ice breaker
Since it has been some time since these crop of students have done visual arts we launched into a basic lesson on kaleidoscopes. I was thrilled when one of the dears said, "This is taking is a lot of engineering...." Because it is; but totally achievable... So, forging ahead the students engineered their own kaleidoscopes - creating art outside and INSIDE!
Project Two - Legacies
The BIG Question: Why is it important for students to invest in a project to have it changed? Now that you've asked it... take a step back and consider the BIG Question in light of life.
Much of what we do is interpreted by others and often viewed through lenses that aren't at all what we meant... Who can control the reception of an idea by any given group of people - especially when the idea is presented without you being available to offer an explanation.
We have to let our ideas and dreams fly and hope that we give the information necessary to guide the recipient. In the world today, students live much of their "experiences" through devices and meaningful conversations are meted out in 150 characters... People read tone or better - interpret tone any way they suppose...
This project explores executive function - process and personal exploration. Students are challenged to initially use 3 oil cray pas - investing in a section of paper that they've divided in 3 sections. The drawing is then given to another in the class, and later another in a different class, then it's returned to the original owner to reclaim or receive anew.
This project will remain on the wall... You might want to review what other rotations shared... It's very interesting.

This is what some of the students thought:
Talia: This is my legacy because it represents all different aspects of nature and how similar things can be and look different while still being beautiful.
Alden: I love how mine turned out I love it and I got good partners.
Sagnik: With this piece, I wanted represent the pursuits of learning about the unknown. Due to this I drew a spacecraft in the middle of space with stars, I left one addition untouched, (a large orange star), and edited the other addition, (a tree), into a planet to populate the blank space.
Issac: My legacy is freedom to travel and choose who you are.
Gerald: I thought it was long
Emily: My final legacy is growth and happiness. It started as joy can be found in everything, then to something, (they did not write anything), and then life with the colors green, brown, and blue. I did not like the shade of colors they chose because I feel like they did not represent life.
Charlie: I like what happened to my project because it added on to my peace and put on different parts.
VP4B: My original legacy was independence and strength, shown in the form of a single dancer on stage. I was inspired by the other drawing, and decided to keep part of one. They inspired change and unpredictability of things happening when you least expect them, even when you're most strong feel...Like you can do things by yourself. Sometime you need other people.
Julia: I liked the project because it teaches a valuable lesson about life and human nature. In life, sometimes your ideas won't be accepted and might be taken in a direction that you didn't intend
Luke: I am very disappointed. Someone didn't get my legacy because I felt like it was important to me.
Violet: My legacy was creativity. In all I liked the project, because we got to see what other people did with it, and it was okay if they didn't do a good job because we could change it. That' what legac[ies] are about. I blended the paint and music notes that the other people drew to represent the burst of colorful creativity that comes from a creative mind.
Hannah: I made the tree ... a . collage because it just looked like every other tree. I wanted it to be special. Just like how everybody has there own individuality.
Kimarah: Now I think my legacy its perfect... because no matter where you're from, [people] should always accept their peers.
Alice: My legacy represents growth and happiness. It represents growth in that the sunflowers are plants so they are always growing/thriving with the sunlight and such. It represents an abundance of happiness because the bright yellow colors of the sunflowers and the sun and the large field of sunflowers themselves represent joy and just brightness in general ....

PROJECT 3 - Mixed Media
... And one more... for the road
Students worked on a collaborative project where the color - not the pattern, was the connector.
